The abyss already looked improbable. Literature made it legendary.

Published in 1885, Jules Verne’s adventure novel uses Pazin as part of its dramatic geography. Official Istria tourism material notes that the unusual landscape inspired Verne to take characters through the mysterious Pazin Abyss.
Why Pazin worked
The town offered exactly the kind of setting Verne repeatedly exploited: engineering, geography, danger and a physical landscape that seemed to open into another world. The medieval castle above the void only intensified that effect.
Read the landscape like a novel
Stand first at the castle edge. Then descend toward the river. The distance between those two viewpoints is the key to understanding why Pazin became more than a location — it became a narrative device.
