Pazin · Central Istria · Croatia
Where Istria
disappears underground.
A river vanishes beneath a medieval castle. A limestone abyss opens in the centre of town. And one of Istria’s strangest landscapes begins.
Not simply a cave.
A landscape in motion.
The Pazinčica flows across the Istrian interior before dropping into the karst gorge beneath Pazin. Above it stands Pazin Castle; below it, the river continues through a subterranean system of chambers, passages and lakes.
This independent guide brings the geology, history, literature and visitor experiences of the place into one story — from the cliff edge to the underground.
01 · THE ABYSS
A river reaches the edge — and vanishes.
The protected landscape encompasses the Pazinčica canyon and its swallow hole. The official Istria tourism portal describes a canyon and abyss roughly 500 metres long and around 100 metres deep, with the subterranean cave continuing beyond the visible entrance.
